About Today's Minister's Wife Newsletter

First Lady Weptanomah Davis 2008Welcome to the Today’s Minister’s Wife Newsletter.  I am excited about this newsletter, and the many opportunities that it will create for women in ministry to dialogue, share and bless each other.

The credit for the vision of this newsletter goes to my mother, Dr. Weptanomah Washington Carter.  Several months into the planning for the 2004 Today’s Minister’s Wife Conference my mother wanted to start a newsletter for ministers’ wives.  She was motivated by a desire for a vehicle for communication between minister’s wives.

From 1990 to 1996 my mother and I wrote a column, ‘Ask Weptanomah’ for the Baltimore Times newspaper.  We were privileged to respond to questions from the residents of Baltimore on a variety of topics.  Aside from the letters for ‘Ask Weptanomah’, Dr. Carter always received missives from minister’s wives.   Many of them contained questions, concerns and solicitations for advice on how to handle any number of situations.  And so, in 2001 my mother and I co-edited a book ‘101 Answers to Questions Asked by Minister’s Wives.’  Still, the letters kept coming.  It was the vision of Dr. Carter that a newsletter would be an ideal way for minister’s wives to learn from and  communicate with each other.

In 2005, we began talking about the newsletter in a casual way.  The year 2005 marked the 40th year of ministry of First Lady Weptanomah Carter alongside her husband Pastor Harold Carter at the New Shiloh Baptist Church.  This was also the year that we became aware of the challenges to my mother’s health.  And so, before we knew it we were looking at 2006 as the start-up year, however it was not to be.  From the beginning of my mother talking about the newsletter I thought it was a wonderful idea.  After my mother passed ideas started to flow to me about the newsletter.  The ideas kept coming, they would not stop.  Whereas I always thought I would be helping my mother as we had done in the past,  soon after she was gone I realized she, in spirit,  was helping me. And so, with the encouragement of my husband Pastor Henry P. Davis and the prayers and support of the people of First Baptist of Church of Highland Park, the premiere issue of Today’s Minister’s Wife newsletter was launched in June 2006.

I love minister’s wives, I love talking to them about everything from the goodness of the Lord, to shopping, and sharing a good joke.  I  love the fellowship with my sisters in the walk.  And I know it to be true that minister’s wives feel a kindred spirit and protection for each other.  And so the Today’s Minister’s Wife newsletter is for all of us as we keep running “looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our Faith.”
